(Presseportal openBroadcast) - The National Gallery Singapore opened up to the public for the first time on November 24, and established itself as the very first dedicated visual arts museum (of this scope, scale, and grandeur) in the country.

Combining two of the most historic buildings in all of Singapore (the old “City Hall” and the former Supreme Court), this museum is the largest of its type in the nation of Singapore and took over 10 years to complete.

An absolute engineering marvel, this museum is loaded with the history of Singapore, as well as amazing art pieces from Singapore artists, artists inspired by Singapore, and grandmasters from around the world.

The history of the National Gallery Singapore buildings

The selection of these two buildings to house the National Gallery cements the kind of history that the museum likes to put on display. After all, City Hall is where the Japanese surrendered during World War II, is only steps away from where the founding Prime Minister watched the first National Day Parade just a year after Singapore independents, and the old Supreme Court is where many of the nation’s laws were originated and upheld.

The building of the new National Gallery

As mentioned above, the construction of this new national museum took a little bit longer than 10 years to create, and cost right around $530 million. The overwhelming majority of the collection is modern art from throughout Singapore and Southeast Asia, though there are more than 8000 pieces from between the 19th and 20th centuries that are considerably older and more historic.

At any one particular point in time, more than 1000 pieces will be on display in the gallery, and the public is welcome to visit. The conception of this museum was constructed and pieced together after “appropriating” inspiration from the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The museum is stunning both inside and out, and really showcases the history and culture of Singapore better than any other museum in the nation.

The National Gallery Singapore belongs to the people of this nation

As the Prime Minister has stated, the success of the National Gallery is not going to be based upon how many tourist’s it attracts or how much attention it gets on the international scale (though both metrics would already be overwhelmingly positive in just the first week of this museum opening).

Instead, the Prime Minister – and the people responsible for the National Gallery Singapore – believe that the success of this institution is going to be based entirely upon whether or not the people of Singapore feel as though this gallery truly belongs to them.

Conceived of as a celebration of Singapore culture, Singapore art, and the spirit of the country, it isn’t difficult to see that this has already been a smashing success. Thousands have already visited the National Gallery, and it’s likely that millions more will filter into and out of its doors in the coming years to see and celebrate everything that it has to offer!
