Tuhina Neogi, MD , the Boston University School of Medicine’s professor and lead author of a new study, reveals that gout sufferers could not even sniff wine without experiencing a gout attack. This has led the research team to suspect that wine consumption could potentially trigger attacks.
Dr. Neogi conducted a survey to further investigate whether or not wine consumption could trigger attacks. The survey involved 724 gout sufferers who were overweight men in their 50’s and who suffered from at least one gout attack in the year before the survey.
It was found that consumption of a single serving of wine in did not increase the risk of gout attacks within a 24-hour period. However, drinking two drinks in one day has increased the risk of gout attacks by 36 percent. The risk increased by 50 percent for those who consumed two to four drinks. The researchers concluded that the risk increased with the wine consumption.
Individuals with diets that are rich in purine-rich foods such as pork, beef, or fish, or those who use diuretics were more at risk of the attacks. Dietary and lifestyle changes are highly recommended to reduce the risk. Consumption of anti-inflammatory food items is also recommended.
