Resveratrol is believed to be one of the most popular antioxidants nowadays. It is thought to be effective at fighting a range of conditions as well as improving overall health. Individuals who want to improve their brain health may also take into account the use of this special antioxidant.
New scientific evidence suggests that resveratrol could slow down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. It is believed that resveratrol has the potential to avoid certain diseases associated with aging.
In the research from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which was published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, it was found that resveratrol could potentially neutralize the toxic, dangerous effects of proteins associated with Alzheimer’s diseases.
It has also been shown that resveratrol could selectively target as well as neutralize clumps of bad peptides or proteins, which have been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. There are many other known benefits that this antioxidant could potentially offer.
It is believed to shrink tumors, inhibit inflammation-causing enzymes, and increase blood flow and thus reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The professor of neurology and director of the memory disorders program at Georgetown University Medical Center, Dr. R. Scott Turner and his team formulated a purified form of resveratrol. It was used in both human and animal studies for the prevention of diabetes, cancer, and other age-related conditions.
The study, which was featured in Neurology, involved 119 men and women. Half of the participants were randomly assigned to take 1,000mg of resveratrol on a daily basis. The other half belonged to the placebo group. All of the subjects suffered from mild or moderate Alzheimer’s disease, and they’ve been studied for a year.
Turner and his colleagues compared the results of the cognitive tests and assessments of the participants. It was found that the resveratrol group experienced no changes in the levels of protein, which typically builds up in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease.
The researchers also measured the amounts of protein in the spinal fluid and blood. They did not notice any difference in a span of one year in the resveratrol group.
Experts believe that as Alzheimer’s disease progresses, more of these protein plaques form in the brain. Fewer of these proteins are also released to the rest of the body. There were no changes in the protein levels in the resveratrol group.
It was also found that they had smaller brain volume, which is believed to be a positive sign in the case of Alzheimer’s disease. It is important to note that this condition causes swelling and inflammation that can interrupt nerve connections (amazon.com/Resveratrol-Supplement-Strength-Extract-capsules/dp/B019C0UU5S).
