The SIRT1 is a master regulator or unifying pathway that has the potential to increase lifespan as well as prevent the development of age-related diseases. Calorie restriction is thought to switch on SIRT1.
In 2003, Sinclair and his colleagues revealed that a natural compound called resveratrol has the potential to turn on SIRT1. It has been able to extend the lifespan in yeast by 70 percent. Resveratrol could be found in food such as red wine, grapes, and certain nuts.
The researchers also found that mice with high-fat diet that were treated with resveratrol lived longer. However, it is important to note that resveratrol did not provide the same impressive results to mice with regular diet.
