(Presseportal openBroadcast) - Orlando, FL – May 30, 2016 - Aging is a normal phase that many people have the opportunity to go through. However, it comes with various undesirable effects on the health and appearance of humans. There are methods believed to fight aging, and one is to follow a particular diet.

Calorie restriction is believed to promote longevity. Many researchers have been finding or formulating a pharmaceutical drug that could mimic calorie restriction. As a matter of fact, it has become a focal point for anti-aging research.

Calorie restricted diets pertain to dietary regimens that decrease calorie consumption by 30 percent to 40 percent. However, it should also include all needed nutrients.

In the 1930s, Clive McCay, a nutritionist at Cornell University, has observed that rats with calorie-restricted diets considerably lived longer than their litter mates. Since then, restricted intake of calorie has been able to extend life in flies, worms, yeast, and some nonhuman primates.

While it has not been known how exactly calorie restriction extends longevity, it is believed that it causes a reduction of stress inside cells. The stress is caused by harmful byproducts called free radicals, which are manufactured during the process of breaking down food.

David Sinclair, an Australian researcher based at Harvard, has been studying sirtuins, which is a group of genes. One of the genes called CIRT1 is similar to mTOR pathway. It is believed that blocking the mTOR pathway could help mimic calorie restriction.

The SIRT1 is a master regulator or unifying pathway that has the potential to increase lifespan as well as prevent the development of age-related diseases. Calorie restriction is thought to switch on SIRT1.

In 2003, Sinclair and his colleagues revealed that a natural compound called resveratrol has the potential to turn on SIRT1. It has been able to extend the lifespan in yeast by 70 percent. Resveratrol could be found in food such as red wine, grapes, and certain nuts.

The researchers also found that mice with high-fat diet that were treated with resveratrol lived longer. However, it is important to note that resveratrol did not provide the same impressive results to mice with regular diet.

Studies are still underway to determine if resveratrol has the same anti-aging effects on humans. Today, more and more people are turning to the use of natural remedies such as resveratrol. Natural supplements are believed to help improve overall health.

There are individuals who take resveratrol supplements to increase their protection against a range of medical conditions. There are also those who are already suffering from certain diseases who believe in the therapeutic effects of resveratrol.

The best resveratrol supplements available nowadays contain extracts of Acai fruit, grape seed, green tea and red wine (
