Hortonís Orthotics & Prosthetics has acquired a VORUM CAD/CAM scanner and high-speed carver, becoming the first in Arkansas to deliver a faster and more comfortable experience for patients needing new orthotic and prosthetic devices.

The computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) scanning technology can digitally capture an amputee or injured patientís limb shape with a pinpoint level of accuracy. Technicians can them use the programís software to modify the shape and create a successfully fitting socket or brace design that can be fabricated quickly and efficiently. Using this technology, the initial fabrication processes that took nearly two hours will now take only two minutes.

ďIím very excited we have it,Ē said Gary Horton (LO, CO, and FAAOP), owner of Hortonís Orthotics & Prosthetics. ďItís going to allow Hortonís Orthotics & Prosthetics to better serve our patients by delivering a more intimate, precise fit in a much shorter amount of time.Ē

The benefits of the technology will be readily apparent to patients from the moment they are first scanned, as plaster casting will no longer be required. The manufacturer has found that children are less apprehensive of the scannerís projecting light than they are of being wrapped in plaster that has to dry and be removed by loud machinery. The entire process has been streamlined for a much easier, less time-consuming patient experience.

Horton said other organizations around the world that use the CAD/CAM equipment have experienced as much as a 600 percent increase in production of custom prosthetics. Hortonís will now be able to serve more patients, helping them enjoy a more active, healthy lifestyle with customized orthotics and prosthetics that fit them exactly how they want.
