(Presseportal openBroadcast) - Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is generally synthesized by alkalization reaction of cellulose with alkali followed by etherification reaction of alkali cellulose with monochloro acetic acid (MCA). Carboxymethyl cellulose is commonly used as sodium salt (NaCMC) in the market. Carboxymethyl cellulose is white or slightly yellowish fibrous compound, which is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic in nature. Carboxymethyl cellulose is highly soluble in water and forms a transparent solution.

Carboxymethyl cellulose is characterized by properties such as emulsifying dispersion and solid dispersion. It is widely used as a rheology modifier, thickening agent, suspending agent as well as a stabilizer. Carboxymethyl cellulose is generally used in two grades viz. high purity grade and technical grade. The high purity grade is generally preferred in food & beverage industry, personal care products and pharmaceutical industry, while the technical grades are generally used in detergents, mining, paints and adhesives, and textiles productions.

Carboxymethyl Cellulose Market: Dynamics

Carboxymethyl cellulose finds applications in food & beverage industry wherein it is used for producing frozen desserts, bakery products, dairy products, pet food, sauces, and several others. Carboxymethyl cellulose helps in reducing fat content in food. Due to its low cost and superior performance characteristics, carboxymethyl cellulose is preferred over other hydrocolloids in the food and beverage industry. Increasing demand for low-fat food products and gluten-free ice creams and other frozen products is estimated to fuel the demand for carboxymethyl cellulose in the global market. Carboxymethyl cellulose is also used in detergent and soap production as it sets a layer, which acts as barrier for dust deposition on to fabric after wash.

Carboxymethyl cellulose is used in pharmaceutical, medical, and dentifrice applications as well. Products such as eye drops, toothpastes, medicine sprays, and tablets contain carboxymethyl cellulose as one of the main ingredients, while in medical treatments it is used to form gels that are used in heart, thoracic, and other surgeries. Also, carboxymethyl cellulose is gaining high adoption in injection used for joint lubrications to prevent possible destruction of the cartilage attached to bones. Owing to the properties of carboxymethyl cellulose, which include high solubility leading to high viscosity along with non-toxicity is gaining high demand in medical and pharmaceutical industry, which is estimated to grow further in coming years.

Furthermore, the carboxymethyl cellulose is also used in paints, adhesives, cosmetics, ceramics, textiles, paper, and oil drilling fluid production.

However, stringent regulations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding food additives and introduction of various other hydrocolloids into the market may present some restraints to the growth of global carboxymethyl cellulose market.

Carboxymethyl Cellulose Market: Segmentation

As carboxymethyl cellulose is widely used in various applications in numerous industries, the global carboxymethyl cellulose market is segmented on the basis of application as food & beverages, detergents, oilfield drilling, pharmaceuticals & cosmetics, paper & textiles, and others (paints, additives, constructions, ceramics, etc.). In terms of market share, the food & beverage application is estimated to account for a significant share in global carboxymethyl cellulose market followed by pharmaceuticals & cosmetics and detergent applications. Owing to high demand for fat-free food products and increasing throughput of food & beverage industry, the food & beverage application segment is projected to continue its dominance in the global market. In terms of grades, global Carboxymethyl Cellulose Market can be segmented as technical grade and higher purity grades.
