Standardized test scores

(Presseportal openBroadcast) - Letís take a look at two statements: 1) "Standardized test scores do not predict a studentís success at our college." and 2) They are strongly biased against low-income students and students of color.
Both of these statements are false and misleading. The SATs are highly predictive of academic success in earning degrees from our most respected colleges and universities. They appear to be biased against racial minorities simply because they objectively measure students' quantitative and math reasoning skills, but perhaps most importantly, their mastery of their mother tongue, the English language.
It is a sad fact that racial minorities suffer disproportionately from an inability to speak and write in English, since a great deal of learning takes place at home, before the student ever sets foot in a classroom.
It is also a sad fact that African American students have a much higher high school dropout rate, and that the ones who do manage to graduate cannot compete with their white Caucasian and Asian classmates if or when they enter a college program.
Site can cite the numerous causes for this, chiefly poverty, and being raised by single moms who themselves have little education to share with their children, but whatever the reason, pretending that these problems don't exist will not help anyone to solve them.
